| Assessing learning technology predictions |
London (UK), May 2012 - (by Bob Little) Making predictions is fun because you can do so in the fairly safe knowledge that no one will remember them. So you can say what you like because you’ll never be held to account for them. So I was delighted to discover that, about this time six years ago, Mark Harrison – formerly of Epic and now of Kineo – offered his predictions for learning technologies in 2012. He was speaking at a meeting of the eLearning Network – now known by the acronym, 'eLN'. [more...] |

| Sex, drugs and social media |
London (UK), March 2012 - (by Bob Little)
No - this headline does not refer to The Learning Awards, a glittering evening held to honour those in the learning world, which was held at the Dorchester Hotel in London in February and attracted the corporate learning world’s great, good and glitzy. These were the first annual Learning Awards but, oddly enough, they were also the 16th annual awards. The previous 15 events had been held under the auspices of the Institute of IT Training which, last year, morphed into the more ubiquitous, charismatic and, frankly, relevant Learning and Performance Institute. This concept is well understood by the Academy of German Cooperatives (ADG), a network of associations that encompasses five regional groupings of cooperatives, and it has been put into practice in the programs made available to 160,000 employees of around 1,150 co-operative banks. Martin Greff, the head of the Academy’s Department of Quality Management and Learning Methodology, will speak at LEARNTEC on the challenges and opportunities presented by the current developments. Stating, "We want to expand access", he explains that mobile devices are already being used on the train, at home, and also during consultation sessions with clients in banks. [more...] |

| Demographic Change |
| What Managers Learn about Older People |
Karlsruhe/Münster (GER), November 2011 – Of course companies have to come to grips with demographic change, but how can older employees be convinced that their services are needed? How can managers make clear to their workers that even though they’ve been on the job for many years, further education is still important? Germany’s Institute for Preventive Healthcare (Institut für gesundheitliche Prävention - IFGP) has an online training program for this purpose, and Managing Director Marc Lenze will explain in his talk at LEARNTEC why having manufacturing assembly lines run a bit slower is not enough. In fact he demands that "Overall, the issue must be addressed from a broader perspective." [more...] |

The German weekly magazine experimented "Stern" did some experimentation with augmented reality, and who knows - perhaps the reader will have a chance to read a follow-up story. At the LEARNTEC Conference, Werner Hinzpeter, editor for popular Hamburg-based news weekly’s special editions, describes on the congress of the LEARNTEC the background of this novel concept and the experiences that came out of it. | 'Little’s Britain' |
| Conflicting signals in eLearning |
London (UK), September 2011 - (by Bob Little) According to a report by virtual learning worlds and serious games’ specialists Ambient, there is a general slow down in spend on self-paced e-learning due to three market factors: 1) The commoditisation of platforms and tools, which reduces market price. 2) Pricing pressures in the corporate eLearning sector caused by the slow economic recovery. 3) The growing tendency for buyers to buy other types of learning technology products – such as virtual classroom technology - rather than an eLearning module.

| Corporate eLearning’s dilemma with Government |
London (UK), March 2011 - (by Bob Little) Technically, the UK Government – and there’s every reason to believe that other European governments take the same view - says that it wants to, and does, encourage small and medium sized companies (SMEs) to bid for, and get, Government contracts. The Government says that this will provide the taxpayer with greater value for money because SMEs tend to be more creative, flexible and so on – and also tend to be cheaper because they don’t have the overheads of a larger firm.
